The Pehli Peedi Fellowship presents the first in a series of stories highlighting the experiences of first-generation students across India.
Vishal Sitra, an 18-year-old first-year B.A. (Hons) Economics student at Azim Premji University, shares the story of his journey from a small village in Kaithal, Haryana, to university life in Bhopal. Thoughtful and confident, he speaks about his roots, his challenges, and the people who made his dreams possible.
“Many students feel alone or helpless due to financial issues. I didn’t even know about this university in Bhopal until someone told me. A lot of people have helped me reach here. Others should get that chance too. I have two younger sisters. I am the first in my family to attend university. I want to encourage the younger people around me to go to college.”

आदित्य: क्या आप मुझे अपने बारे में बता सकते हैं?
Aditya: Can you tell me about yourself?
विशाल: मैं 18 साल का हूँ और अज़ीम प्रेमजी विश्वविद्यालय में इकोनॉमिक्स पढ़ता हूँ। मैं हरियाणा के एक छोटे से गांव कैथल से हूँ।
Vishal: I am 18 years old and I am studying Economics at Azim Premji University. I come from a small village in Haryana called Kaithal.
आदित्य: क्या यह पहले से तय था कि आप कॉलेज जाएंगे?
Aditya: Was it always known that you would go to college?
विशाल: नहीं। मेरे पापा केवल आठवीं तक और मेरी माँ केवल पाँचवीं तक पढ़ी हैं। उन्हें पढ़ाई-लिखाई की ज़्यादा जानकारी नहीं थी। स्कूल और कॉलेज की तैयारी के दौरान मुझे हर बात उन्हें समझानी पड़ती थी — मैं क्या कर रहा हूँ, क्यों कर रहा हूँ। लेकिन मेरे चाचा, जो एक प्राइवेट नौकरी करते हैं, समय-समय पर मुझे गाइड करते थे। पर सबसे ज़्यादा मदद योगेश सर ने की। वो हमारे स्कूल में गाइडेंस काउंसलर थे। उन्होंने मुझे अज़ीम प्रेमजी विश्वविद्यालय के एंट्रेंस एग्ज़ाम के बारे में बताया। उन्होंने कहा, 'यह एक अच्छी यूनिवर्सिटी है, सहयोगी माहौल है, स्कॉलरशिप्स मिलती हैं, लाइब्रेरी भी शानदार है — तुम्हारे लिए एकदम सही जगह होगी।
Vishal: No. My father studied up to the 8th standard, and my mother up to the 5th. They aren’t very familiar with academics. Throughout school and during my college entrance process, I had to explain everything I was planning or doing. My uncle, who works in a private job, would guide me every now and then. But more than anyone, it was Yogesh Sir—our school’s guidance counselor—who helped me the most. He was the one who told me about the entrance exam for Azim Premji University. He said, “This is a good university with a supportive environment, scholarships, and a great library. It would be the right place for you”.
आदित्य: आपने किस स्कूल में पढ़ाई की? आपका अनुभव कैसा रहा?
Aditya: Which school did you attend? What was your experience?
विशाल: मैं नवोदय विद्यालय (सरकारी स्कूल) में पढ़ा। यह हर ज़िले में होता है। मुझे आठवीं में एंट्रेंस एग्ज़ाम के ज़रिए एडमिशन मिला था और फिर 12वीं तक पढ़ाई की। स्कूल में कॉलेज के बारे में ज़्यादा बात नहीं होती थी। वहाँ दो सेक्शन थे, हर एक में 40 छात्र थे — एक मेडिकल और एक नॉन-मेडिकल। मेरे दोस्तों और जानने वालों में से कोई भी कॉलेज नहीं गया।
मेरे माता-पिता को नंबरों की चिंता नहीं थी। उन्हें यह ज़्यादा ज़रूरी लगता था कि मैं क्या सीख रहा हूँ।
Vishal: I studied at Navodaya Vidyalaya (a government school) that is in every district. I got admission in Class 8 through an entrance exam and continued there till Class 12. College wasn’t a major topic of discussion at school. There were two sections of 40 students each — one for medical and one for non-medical. None of my friends or acquaintances went on to college.
My parents never focused on how many marks I scored. What mattered to them was what I actually learned.
आदित्य: कॉलेज तक की आपकी यात्रा कैसी रही?
Aditya: Tell us about your journey to university.
विशाल: मैं हमेशा से ग्रेजुएट होना चाहता था, लेकिन यह नहीं पता था कि यह कैसे संभव होगा। मुझे कोई गाइडेंस मिलेगी या नहीं, कौन सा कोर्स चुनना चाहिए — कुछ भी स्पष्ट नहीं था। मेरे चाचा ने मुझे तकनीकी फील्ड्स में जाने को कहा, जैसे इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स। सबकी अलग राय थी, लेकिन मुझे बस ग्रेजुएट होना था।
एंट्रेंस एग्ज़ाम में मैथ्स और इंग्लिश दोनों थे। 11वीं और 12वीं में मैंने मैथ्स नहीं पढ़ा था, और इंग्लिश मेरी कमज़ोर थी क्योंकि मैं ग्रामीण पृष्ठभूमि से आता हूँ। यह चुनौतीपूर्ण था। एंट्रेंस की तैयारी के चलते मेरी बोर्ड परीक्षा की तैयारी थोड़ी पीछे रह गई। एक टीचर ने यहां तक कह दिया, "12वीं में मेरिट ऐसे ही नहीं आती," और वो बात सुनकर मैं काफी हिल गया। लेकिन मैंने ठान लिया था कि मैं दोनों करूँगा — और मैंने किया भी।
मैंने किसी कोचिंग का सहारा नहीं लिया। मेरी पूरी तैयारी योगेश सर ने करवाई। उन्होंने मुझे अन्य अभ्यर्थियों से मिलवाया, जिन्होंने मुझे एप्लिकेशन भरने, एडमिट कार्ड डाउनलोड करने जैसी प्रक्रियाओं में मदद की।
पहले राउंड में मेरा एडमिशन नहीं हुआ, लेकिन दूसरे राउंड में मिल गया और मुझे फुल स्कॉलरशिप भी मिली।
Vishal: I always wanted to graduate, but I didn’t know how it would happen—whether I’d find the right guidance or even which course to choose. My uncle encouraged me to pursue a technical qualification in fields like electronics. Everyone had a different opinion, but I was clear about one thing: I wanted to graduate.
The entrance exam had Maths and English. Since I hadn’t studied Maths in Classes 11 and 12, and my English was weak due to my rural background. It was challenging. Preparing for the entrance meant I fell behind in my 12th board preparation. One teacher even said, “You don’t get merit in 12th just like that,” and that really shook my confidence. But I made up my mind—I would manage both, and I did.
I didn’t take any coaching. Yogesh Sir guided me through the preparation. He connected me with other applicants who helped me with practical things—like filling out the application form and downloading the admit card.
I didn’t get through in the first round, but I got admission in the second and even a full scholarship.
आदित्य: अब तक विश्वविद्यालय का अनुभव कैसा रहा है?
Aditya: How has the university experience been for you so far?
विशाल: अज़ीम प्रेमजी विश्वविद्यालय ग्रामीण छात्रों का ध्यान रखती है। शुरूआती कुछ सेमेस्टर में हमें हिंदी में पढ़ाई करने की छूट दी गई थी।
अब मैंने अपना पहला वर्ष पूरा कर लिया है। मैंने बी.ए. इकोनॉमिक्स लिया है, लेकिन साथ में अन्य विषय भी पढ़ता हूँ। हर सेमेस्टर में 25 क्रेडिट लेने होते हैं — मैंने पहले सेमेस्टर में 30 क्रेडिट अर्जित किए। मैंने गिटार पर एक CRX कोर्स भी लिया, जिसमें शिक्षक ने हमें बेसिक कॉर्ड्स सिखाए। एक गाना है — 'तुम ही दिल्लगी, तुम ही जाने मन।' मैं वो सीखना चाहता हूँ।
Vishal: Azim Premji University is supportive of students from rural backgrounds. In the initial semesters, they even allowed us to study in Hindi if needed.
I’ve now completed my first year. I’m pursuing a B.A. in Economics, but I also get the opportunity to explore other subjects. Each semester requires 25 credits; I earned 30 in my first. One of the courses I took was a CRX class on guitar, where the teacher taught us basic chords. There’s a song called Tum Hi Dillagi, Tum Hi Jaane Man. I want to learn that.
आदित्य: आपके जैसे पृष्ठभूमि से आने वाले छात्रों के लिए सबसे बड़ी चुनौती क्या है?
Aditya: Any specific challenges you think students from your background face?
विशाल: गाइड करने वाला कोई नहीं होता — क्या करना है, क्या नहीं, कौन सी संभावनाएं हैं — ये समझाने वाला कोई नहीं होता। दूसरी बात है भाषा की। गांव में अगर कोई इंग्लिश बोलने की कोशिश करे तो लोग उसका मज़ाक उड़ाते हैं। इससे एक डर बैठ जाता है, और जब छात्र बाहर की दुनिया में जाते हैं, तो बोलने से डरते हैं। इसका सीधा असर उनकी पढ़ाई पर पड़ता है।
Vishal: There’s no one to guide them—no one to explain what to do, what to avoid, or what opportunities are out there.
Then there’s the language barrier. Back home, if someone tries to speak English, people often mock them. This creates a fear of speaking up, and when students step out of that environment, they carry that fear with them. It can really affect their studies.
आदित्य: जब आप विश्वविद्यालय में आए थे तब आपके लक्ष्य क्या थे? अब क्या हैं?
Aditya: What were your goals when you joined university? What are they now?
विशाल: शुरुआत में मैं बैंकिंग क्षेत्र में जाना चाहता था — चाहे वह प्राइवेट हो या सरकारी। लेकिन अब, जब से मैंने अर्थशास्त्र पढ़ना शुरू किया है, इस विषय में मेरी गहरी रुचि बनने लगी है। मुझे अपने भविष्य पर पूरा विश्वास है। मैं अपनी क्षमताओं को जानता हूँ और मुझे यकीन है कि मैं वह ज़रूर हासिल करूँगा जो मैं चाहता हूँ।
Vishal: I initially wanted to enter the banking sector—whether private or public didn’t matter. But now that I’m studying economics, I’ve started to develop a deeper interest in the subject. I’m confident about my future. I know my strengths, and I’m determined to achieve what I set out to do.
आदित्य: कॉलेज में दाख़िले के बाद क्या आपके समुदाय में आपकी छवि बदली है?
Aditya: Do you feel your image has changed in your community after joining university?
विशाल: हाँ, बदली है। जब गाँव का कोई लड़का बाहर पढ़ाई या नौकरी करने जाता है, तो लोग उसे अलग नजर से देखने लगते हैं। कहते हैं, ‘अब इसमें मॉडर्न समझ आ गई है।’ उसकी सोच गाँव की दुनिया से अलग मानी जाती है। मेरे साथ भी कुछ ऐसा ही हुआ है।
Vishal: Yes. Even when someone from my village gets a job outside, people start seeing them differently. They say, “Now this person has developed modern sensibilities”—a mindset that’s different from the way people think in the village. It’s been the same for me.
आदित्य: जब आपको कॉलेज में दाख़िला मिला, तो आपके परिवार का क्या रिएक्शन थी?
Aditya: When you got admission into a university, what was your family’s reaction?
विशाल: मेरा परिवार मेरे लिए बहुत खुश था। उन्होंने मुझसे कहा कि इस मौके का इस्तेमाल एक अच्छा करियर बनाने के लिए करू। मेरे माता-पिता चाहते थे कि मैं अच्छा करू और सफल बनू, और मुझे भी लगा कि कॉलेज की पढ़ाई इस दिशा में एक अच्छा रास्ता है।
Vishal: My family was really happy for me. They encouraged me to make the most of this opportunity and build a strong career. My parents wanted me to do well and succeed in life, and I believed that a college education was a good path to get there.
आदित्य: पहली पीढ़ी के छात्रों के लिए सबसे ज़रूरी चीज़ क्या है?
Aditya: What is the one thing first-generation students need to succeed?
विशाल: सहारा। भावनात्मक, आर्थिक, शैक्षणिक — किसी भी तरह का सहारा। बहुत से छात्र अकेलेपन और आर्थिक तनाव की वजह से हताश महसूस करते हैं। मुझे तो यह भी नहीं पता था कि भोपाल में ऐसी यूनिवर्सिटी है — जब तक किसी ने नहीं बताया। बहुत लोगों ने मेरी मदद की। दूसरों को भी वही मौका मिलना चाहिए।
मेरी दो छोटी बहनें हैं। मैं अपने परिवार में पहला हूँ जो विश्वविद्यालय गया हूँ। मैं अपने आसपास के युवाओं को कॉलेज जाने के लिए प्रोत्साहित करना चाहता हूँ। मैं उनके लिए वही भूमिका निभाना चाहूँगा जो योगेश सर ने मेरे लिए निभाई थी।
Vishal: Support. Emotional, financial, academic — any kind of support. Many students feel alone or helpless due to financial issues. I didn’t even know about this university in Bhopal until someone told me. A lot of people have helped me reach here. Others should get that chance too.
I have two younger sisters. I am the first in my family to attend university. I want to encourage the younger people around me to go to college. I hope to play the same role for them that Yogesh sir played for me.
आदित्य: आप पहली बार कॉलेज जाने वाले छात्र को क्या सलाह देंगे?
Aditya: What advice would you give a first-generation student just starting out?
विशाल: कभी मत सोचो कि तुम कुछ नहीं कर सकते। अगर कुछ चाहिए तो दोस्तों, परिवार — किसी से भी पूछो। ग्रामीण पृष्ठभूमि वाले छात्रों को इंग्लिश नहीं आती, और इससे आत्मविश्वास हिल जाता है। पर पहला कदम लो। एक बार ले लिया, तो आगे का रास्ता अपने आप मिल जाएगा।
Vishal: Never believe that you can't do something. If you need help, reach out—ask your friends, your family, anyone. Students from rural backgrounds might struggle with English, and that can shake their confidence. But the key is to take the first step. Once you do, you’ll figure the rest out.
